LORD’S PRAYER FOCUS

During the next 6-7 weeks we will be focusing on the Lord’s Prayer in our Lenten Study, and with the weekly messages during worship. The 3rd grade Sunday School class is also learning about The Lord’s Prayer. To assist in this focus, we will be using different versions of The Lord’s Prayer during worship, including in our prayer time. The wording will be reflected in our order of worship as well as on the screens. The focus of this series and the different wording is to help us reconnect with the deeper meaning and power of this beautiful prayer.

CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING

There are so many places in our world experiencing great need.  One that strikes close to the heart of our church is that of Haiti.  Bruce Blumer has shared with us that the cost of food and fuel, and so many basic goods in Haiti have risen in price drastically because of governmental issues in Haiti.  Bruce indicates that he has the food and a shipping container arranged for but covering the cost of getting the shipping container to Haiti is the next hurdle to clear.  Our Church leadership has decided to give half of our Christmas Eve Offering to this need with Haiti Alive.  Special “Christmas” offering envelopes are available at the entries to our Worship Center.  Please place your Christmas Eve offering in one of these envelopes or write “Christmas Eve” on your check in the memo area.  If you are giving your regular “Church Pledge” gift on Christmas Eve, please indicate that on the check or put it in your regular offering envelope.  Thank you for your generosity and making a difference in our community and in other parts of the world.

We are building “connections” to last a lifetime!!

Alas for those who go down to Egypt for help and who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord! Yet he too is wise and brings disaster; he does not call back his words, but will rise against the house of the evildoers, and against the helpers of those who work iniquity.

Halloween fun for Saturday, October 29.  There are two trick-or-treating events in town that afternoon.  The Middle Schoolers (6th-8th  graders) will be hosting the Trunk or Treat at the Middle School.  We will take the bus over at 3:30pm.  The event is from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  Please let me know if your youth is riding with me or meeting us there and what your pickup plans are.

The Senior High Youth will be hosting the Main Street Trick or Treat from 2 pm until 4 pm.  They will set up on Main Street across from the church.  Costumes are encouraged for both events, but please make sure they are appropriate for younger children to view.   If you have any questions, please contact Cindy at 605-999-9680.

and your patience.

OCTOBER “ONE THING”

October’s “One Thing” is Mac and Cheese boxes or single microwave cups for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Meal baskets. Our goal is 500 boxes. The meals are distributed to people of need in our community. Thank you for your generous giving.

SILENT AUCTION

There is a display of items made by Mildred Merriman, a long-time Tuesday Quilter here at Downtown FUMC who passed away a few years ago. Her family has shared them with the church. We ask that you please check them out and place your bid on the sheets by the items.

“YOU ARE NOT ALONE”

Downtown FUMC Family Ministry invites ALL youth, parents, grandparents, and ANYONE who loves and cares for our youth community to join us for A Mother’s Story: Suicide Prevention. On Wed., Oct. 12, 7-8 PM, Alex’ mom, Stefanie (James) Kummer, will be sharing her son’s story of how he tragically died from suicide and her hope to bring awareness. Presentation is in the Worship Center/Sanctuary. The public is invited.

2 ND GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION/CHILDREN’S SUNDAY

Bible Presentation and Children’s Sunday is Sun., Oct. 16. 2 nd Graders will be receiving their Bible and children will be participating in the worship service.

“SHOEBOX CHRISTMAS”

Family Ministry Team will again be participating in the Spirit Lake Ministry’s Shoebox Christmas! Last year, over 5,000 shoeboxes were received for children that might not otherwise get a Christmas gift. This year, Downtown FUMC is filling boxes a little differently. There will be an “Angel Tree” set up in the Gathering Area from Sun., Oct. 16-Sun., Nov. 6, where anyone may pick a tag from the tree and follow the instructions available by the tree. Thank you for all you do to support this important ministry! Questions? Contact Becky Koch, Director of Family Ministry at becky@downtownfumc.com

FREE BLOOD PRESSURES COMING

Sun., Oct. 23, from 9:30-10 AM, Health Ministry Team will be doing free blood pressure screenings in the area by the office.

There are a few copies of our Church Directory on a table in the Gathering Area, however, please know it is already in need of updating. There are additional photos that have been submitted and some phone numbers that need changing. There is no charge, but a free will donation is welcomed.

TIME OF PRAYER Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying

Silent Reflection ~ Pastor’s Prayer ~ The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
