Our “One Thing” for October is Mac and Cheese boxes or single microwave cups for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Meal baskets. The meals are distributed to people of need in our community. Thank you for your generous giving.

There is a display of items made by Mildred Merriman, a long-time Tuesday Quilter here at Downtown FUMC who passed away a few years ago. Her family has shared them with the church. We ask that you please check them out and place your bid on the sheets by the items.

FAMILY FUN EVENT . . .FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

“Carving Out Time for Jesus!” is scheduled for Wed., Oct. 5, from 5:30-6:30 pm. There will be pumpkin carving, painting, and decorating! Please bring a pumpkin for each participating member, and the rest will be provided. RSVP’s to Becky are appreciated, but not necessary to attend. All ages are welcome. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

FREE BLOOD PRESSURES COMING

Sun., Oct. 23, from 9:30-10 AM, Health Ministry Team will be doing free blood pressure screenings in the area by the office.

OFFICE MANAGER NEEDED

Downtown FUMC is searching for an Office Manager. This position will cover office duties, including weekly bulletin and scheduling. Organizational and computer skills, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Suite required. The online application is posted to our Facebook page and our website under the “position openings” section. SEPTEMBER “ONE THING”

is “Our Home” in Parkston, Huron and the surrounding area. Our Home, Inc. programs offer a comprehensive continuum of residential treatment to youth with varying and unique needs. We are collecting coloring books, adult coloring books, sudoku books, cross words, word searches, etc. You may place the books on our “One Thing” shelf in the gathering area.

CHURCH DIRECTORY

There are a few copies of our Church Directory on a table in the Gathering Area, however, please know it is already in need of updating. There are additional photos that have been submitted and some phone numbers that need changing. There is no charge, but a free will donation is welcomed.

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND YOUTH GROUP

PARENTS: Sunday School and Youth Group are back! Youth Group will be every Wednesday, at 6 PM. The schedule will be Overflow worship at 6 PM, a meal for the Youth and volunteers at 6:30 PM, and end with small group at 7:00 PM. Sunday School is at 9 AM. We are asking that parents sign their children up for both Sunday School and Youth Group. The online registration form is on our Facebook and website, or there are paper copies in front of the Family Ministries office. This is going to be an exciting year!

PRIME TIME ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

Prime-Time Adult Sunday School class will meet at 9 AM (during the Sunday School hour). The first topic will be a journey through the book of Proverbs.

GRIEVING WITH GREAT HOPE

Any adults who experienced grief due to loss of a loved one through death are invited to participate in this 6-week session, beginning Sun., Sept. 25, 6-8 PM at Holy Spirit Gathering Space. For more info, contact Mary Ann VanWassenhove (605-996-3080) or Barb Feilmeier (605.996.6319).

ATTENTION YOUTH GROUP FAMILIES

Wed., Sept. 28, both Youth Groups will attend the movie, Play the Flute, at Mitchell Christian School. They will meet at 6 pm for supper at Downtown and then be transported to the Christian School by church bus. The movie begins at 7 pm, so plan for pick up at 9 pm. All Youth must be picked up and signed out with a Youth leader AT MITCHELL CHRISTIAN by 9 PM. If your Youth is driving themselves, a parent consent form is needed. Questions? AsONE MINISTRIES – IMMERSION TRIP DOCUMENTARY

Kristy Szabo and Jacki Miskimins are participating in an Immersion Trip yo Uganda this October with AsOne Ministries. AsOne, based out of Sioux Falls with roots in Mitchell, works to alleviate systemic poverty in Uganda through wholistic, community-based solutions including education, social enterprise, healthcare, and agriculture training. Logan Theatre will show a documentary on Thurs., Sept. 29, 7 pm. Free tickets are available at the church office. To learn more, you may talk with Kristy or Jacki.

UNEXPECTED HEROES

Pastor Keith’s new sermon series is called Unexpected Heroes. The Bible is full of stories and examples of unexpected persons making all the difference in a story or situation. Who knows if you or I might be the unexpected hero in someone’s faith story.

Special Olympics South Dakota is hosting a Fall Classic/Bocce Tournament at Cadwell Park, on Fri., Sept. 23. They are in serious need of volunteers. Please check the Bulletin Board near the office for more information and the times/events volunteers are needed.

Pastor Keith’s new sermon series, beginning this Sunday, is called Unexpected Heroes. The Bible is full of stories and examples of unexpected persons making all the difference in a story or situation. Who knows if you or I might be the unexpected hero in someone’s faith story.

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sun., Sept. 11, 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. PARENTS: Sunday School and Youth Group are back! Youth Group will begin Wed., Sept. 14, at 6pm. Sunday School will start Sun., Sept. 18, at 9am. Youth Group is going to be a little different this year, starting with Overflow worship at 6, a meal for the Youth and volunteers, and end with a small group. We are asking that parents sign their kids up for both Sunday School and Youth Group. The online registration form is on our Facebook and website, or there are paper copies in front of the Family Ministries office. We are so excited to kick off this school year!!

PRIME TIME ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

AsONE MINISTRIES – IMMERSION TRIP & DOCUMENTARY

Kristy Szabo and Jacki Miskimins are participating in an Immersion Trip to Uganda this October with AsOne Ministries. AsOne, based out of Sioux Falls with roots in Mitchell, works to alleviate systemic poverty in Uganda through wholistic, community-based solutions including education, social enterprise, healthcare, and agriculture training. Logan Theatre will show a documentary on Thurs., Sept. 29, 7 pm. Free tickets are available at the church office. To learn more, you may talk with Kristy or Jacki.

AUGUST “ONE THING”

For our August "One Thing" we will be collecting cans of wet cat food for the Mitchell Animal Rescue. They are looking specifically for Fancy Feast kitten pate or Friskies adult pate, but any kind of wet cat food will work. The Mitchell Animal Rescue is a small group of people who are committed to helping rescue pets from the city pound as well as assisting other pets in need. You can place your donations on the "One Thing" shelf in the gathering area. Thank you!

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND YOUTH GROUP

Sunday School and Youth Group are back! Sunday School will start on Sunday, September 18th at 9am and Youth Group will start on Wednesday, September 14th at 6pm. Youth Group is going to be a little different this year. It will start with a small worship service at 6, then a meal for the Youth and volunteers, and ending with a small group. We are asking that parents sign their kids up for both Sunday School and Youth Group. You can register online by clicking here, or there are paper copies in front of the Family Ministries office. We are so excited to kick off this school year with everyone!!

OFFICE MANAGER NEEDED

Johanna has brought great gifts to our church office over the past year. She has a new opportunity to grow and bring her skills to the Mitchell Chamber.  Because she is leaving, we are starting the search for her replacement. Seeking Office Manager for Downtown Mitchell First United Methodist Church. Cover office duties, including weekly bulletin and scheduling. TRANSFORMING LIVES: HOPE IN ACTION

Dr. Donald E. Messer, former president of Dakota Wesleyan University (1971-81) will provide an overview of the Center for Health and Hope, a non-profit faith-based 501c3 charity, after the service in the chapel. He will share how First United Methodist Church has provided resources over the years to combat poverty, stigma, and discrimination in Africa and Asia. WEDNESDAY NIGHT HELP

Becky and Cindy will be in the gathering area after church on Sunday, Aug. 28th to sign people up to help with the Youth meal that will be starting on Wednesday nights.

UNEXPECTED HEROES

Join us on Sunday September 11 (outdoor worship at Hitchcock Park) as Pastor Keith will be starting a new sermon series called Unexpected Heroes! The Bible is full of stories and examples of an unexpected person making all the difference in a story or situation. We will examine the importance of unexpected heroes not only in our world but also in our faith. In fact, “The Way” or the Jesus Movement is built on Unexpected Heroes. And who knows, you or I just might be the unexpected hero in someone’s faith story today…or in the days to come.

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sunday, Sept. 11, starting at 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. FALL SCHEDULE

It had been our plan for our church to return to two worship services in September, however, to do that we would need additional musicians and technical helpers for our livestream, radio, and sound needs. Unfortunately, the additional help has not materialized. At our July Church Council meeting it was decided to continue with one worship service in the fall. We are going to try a slight change in timing for our Sunday morning schedule. Sunday School will begin at 9:00 am and Worship will begin at 10:00 am. Even with the one service schedule we could still use more people to serve in music and technology on Sunday morning. We are excited for the new Sunday School year and fall worship season to begin.

He will be completing the 62-mile ride to help our tuckpointing project that will be starting soon to improve the exterior of our church building. You can donate to this project by pledging an amount per mile or you can just make one overall donation. You can place your donations in the offering, just make sure they are marked “Tour de Corn” or send/bring them into the church office. Thank you!

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

We are having the Blessing of the Backpacks during worship on Sunday, August 21st. We invite all children, youth, teachers, and school administrators to bring their backpacks to worship. We will pray over them for the school year ahead.

DAKOTAS CONFERENCE JOB OPENING

Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church is seeking a full time Assistant Conference Benefits officer to assist in the administration of the Dakotas Conference clergy and lay staff benefits program. You must have the ability to organize, problem solve, maintain records, and have oral and written communication skills. Knowledge in the use of data bases and computer skills is important. Want to combine your knowledge of technology with your passion for service and get paid for it?  Downtown First United Methodist Church has an opportunity for you! In this part-time role, the Head Technology Personnel will oversee the technology for worship, presentations, livestream, and radio broadcasts. You must be available for Sunday morning services and other services as needed (funerals, weddings etc.). Salary will depend on your skills, but we are willing to train the right individual. BILINGUAL SERVICE

Today, July 31st, the Hispanic Church has invited our congregation to worship with them at a bilingual service at 12pm in the chapel. They have also invited us for lunch at 2pm at Hitchcock Park.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DISTRIBUTION

Love Feast school supply distribution is Saturday, August 6. Help is needed at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 5 to assemble the kits & on Saturday, August 6 to help hand them out. Please see Carol Hasz in the lounge after the service or call her at 605-770-7991. Thank you.

Pastor Keith is participating in the “Tour de Corn” bike event this year on August 20th! He will be completing the 62-mile ride to help our tuckpointing project that will be starting soon to improve the exterior of our church building. You can place your donations in the offering, just make sure they are marked “Tour de Corn” or send/bring them into the church office. Thank you!

MUISC PREFERENCE SURVEY

As we look to the fall, the plan is to go back to two Sunday morning worship services. The early service will be at 9:17am and the second service will be at 11am. Sunday School will begin at 9:30am. We are still considering which service, contemporary or traditional, will go in which time slot. We are also hoping to start a second Praise Team to add to our variety of musicians helping lead worship. You can help our leadership out as we consider these decisions by filling out a brief survey. WE ARE HIRING!

Want to combine your knowledge of technology with your passion for service and get paid for it? Downtown First United Methodist Church has an opportunity for you! In this part-time role, the Head Technology Personnel will oversee the technology for worship, presentations, livestream, and radio broadcasts. You must be available for Sunday morning services and other services as needed (funerals, weddings etc.). Salary will depend on your skills, but we are willing to train the right individual. BIRTHDAY CARD

There are note cards on the prayer request table in the gathering area for Mona Skidmore whose birthday is Tuesday, June 28th. We ask that anyone who would like, take a note card, and write Mona a Birthday message. You can leave them on the table and the staff will take care of them.

An important part of worship is that of our month gathering at the Lord's Table for Holy Communion. We need a team of people willing to prepare, possibly help serve, and clean up after our monthly Communion services. PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY

This Sunday, June 12th, is Peace with Justice Sunday. On Peace with Justice Sunday, we partner with other United Methodist congregations in a special offering to support advocacy around the world. Together we strengthen God’s creation with ministries that challenge structures of inequality. We empower people and communities through systemic change in ways that bring true and lasting peace with justice. We have envelopes at both worship center entrances for you to place your donation or put it in the offering and mark it “Peace with Justice.”

With so much uncertainty, anxiety, and sickness in our world today, one thing that is certain is that God is only a prayer away. From now on, there will be a “Prayer Box” table in the gathering area. Everyone is encouraged to list prayer needs for friends, family, or yourself. These requests can be marked as “confidential” or “public.” Confidential prayer concerns will be shared only with Pastor Keith or Short Larson, Congregational Care.

CLEAN COMEDY FOR A CAUSE

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sunday, Sept. 11, starting at 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. Their goal is to raise funds for their new Women's Village (building homes for women and their children) and scholarship support for their school. It’s back! We are having in-person VBS this year for this first time since Covid!! The theme for this years Vacation Bible School is “Hay Day.” On Friday, June 10th, there will be a family hoedown meal from 5:30-6pm and activities from 6-7:30pm. On Saturday, June 11th, there will be activities from 9-11am, including a snack. On Sunday, June 12th, there will be a VBS celebration during worship with a fun fellowship to follow. You can register at the registration table outside the Family Ministry office or you can register online by clicking here.

MAY “ONE THING”

For our May “One Thing” we are collecting donations for the Dakotas Conference 2022 Miracle Offering: Wings for Wellness. This year, the money is going to support mental health in the Native American communities in our area. The week of May 1st-May 7th we will be collecting any lose change. May 8th-14th we will be collecting $1 bills. May 15th-21st will be $5 bills. May 22nd -28th will be $10 bills. And the last week, May 29th-31st, will be any donation you would like to make. You can place the money in the “One Thing” buckets placed in the gathering area and both worship center entrances. Thank you!

LUMINARIES FOR SALE

On Sunday, June 5th, the Health Ministry Team will be selling luminaries for the Heart & Sole Cancer Walk/Run for $5 each in the gathering area. The cancer walk/run is being held at Hitchcock Park on Friday, June 17th at 6:30pm.

PRAYER REQUEST BOX

With so much uncertainty, anxiety, and sickness in our world today, one thing that is certain is that God is only a prayer away. From now on, there will be a “Prayer Box” table in the gathering area. Everyone is encouraged to list prayer needs for friends, family, or yourself. These requests can be marked as “confidential” or “public.” Confidential prayer concerns will be shared only with Pastor Keith or Short Larson, Congregational Care.

COMMUNION ELEMENTS

Next Sunday, June 5th, will be a communion Sunday. There are communion elements to take in the gathering area for those that might be worshipping at home. Feel free to take as many as you want for yourself or to bring to someone else.

CLEAN COMEDY FOR A CAUSE

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sunday, Sept. 11, starting at 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. Their goal is to raise funds for their new Women's Village (building homes for women and their children) and scholarship support for their school.
