“The Angels of Christmas” Advent Study

Pastor Keith is leading an advent study on “The Angels of Christmas”, Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM at the church. There are 3 weeks left, Dec., 7th , 14th , and 21st. All are welcome. Books are available in the office for $13.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE

The Health Ministry Team’s annual Service of Remembrance will be held Sunday, December 11th at 2PM. An angel ornament will be given to those that have made a reservation. Please call the office to make a reservation.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

Our Children's Christmas Program will be held on Sunday, December 11th during worship.

We are currently accepting candy donations for the children’s Christmas sacks. Please drop off any donations in the office. Thank you!

LOVE FEAST

Our Christmas meal will be December 15th. Workers and donations are needed. Please sign up with Carol Hasz in the Gathering Area.

Love Feast is also having a hat and mitten giveaway on December 15th. Donations of any sizes for adults and children are needed. There are totes located at the doors for your donations.

DECEMBER “ONE THING”

Our “One Thing” will be cereal for the MHS Snack Pack Food Pantry. This is a new program brought to Mitchell High School. Each school week MHS students are able to choose 6 food items to take home for the weekend.

 CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS

If you would like to purchase a poinsettia in honor of or in memory of a loved one, please fill out a Christmas Poinsettia card located on the Connection Center table and as you enter the Worship Center. The price is $15 each and the deadline is December 18th. You will be able to pick them up after either Christmas Eve Service.

FINANCE UPDATE

An update from finance… we ended November with another positive month of operating income- lessening our operating deficit for the year to $36,347.93. Thank you for continuing to consider the church in your year-end giving.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO VISIT THE HOLY LAND?

Hank Kor will be hosting a trip through Educational Opportunities on October 10-19, 2023. He will also be adding an extension to Jordon to visit Petra. (You can check Petra out online.) The return date if one chooses the extension, would be October 23. Feel free to call Hank at 605-999-5676 or you can check out the brochure in the gathering area.

“The Angels of Christmas” Advent Study

Pastor Keith will be leading an advent study on “The Angels of Christmas” which will focus on the Angel appearances in the Christmas Story- Zecharia, Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds. We will meet at the church on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM beginning November 30th and continuing through December 21st. All are welcome. Stop by the office to purchase a book for $13.  

CHARGE CONFERENCE

 Join us for our 2022 Charge Conference on Sunday, December 4th  at 12:30 pm at the DWU Sherman Center. Fusion is hosting this years Conference, which will include several churches in our area. Rev. Rebecca Trefz will lead our time together.  You are invited to eat lunch with other United Methodist at the DWU Cafeteria, located in the DWU Sherman Center. The buffet cost is $6 per person.

BISHOP’S 2022 THANKSGIVING OFFERING:

This year’s Conference Thanksgiving Offering will stay here in the Dakota’s, feeding neighbors in our own communities through Dakotas Conference Hunger Grants. Offerings will be distributed to local congregations and communities to help feed those facing hunger.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS

We ended the month of October with a positive $2,664.81 operating income- lessening our operating deficit for the year to $37,986.03. We will be able to provide November numbers next Sunday. As 2022 wraps up and you are considering your year- end giving, please continue to keep the church in mind.

FALL STEWARDSHIP FOCUS

As we prepare for 2023, our Fall Stewardship Focus will be on November 13 & 20. We will look at some Unexpected Heroes of the Bible and see how their giving and serving made a significant difference and touched the life of the church. November 20th will be our commitment Sunday. Each of us can be Unexpected Heroes in our community and in our church through our giving, our serving, our praying, our presence and our witness. Please be praying about how you will live out your faith through your commitment to our church in 2023.

 We will once again be passing the offering plates to receive the morning offering. We will also have the Noisy Buckets on the second Sunday of each month.

This month our church is in charge of providing buns for the Mitchell Food Pantry Thanksgiving meal. As our November “One Thing”, we will be collecting cash donations to purchase the buns. Please place your donations in the “One Thing” box located in the gathering area. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to give.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT YOUTH GROUP MEALS 

 As a new year approaches, we are in need of volunteers for the meals. If you feel like this could be your opportunity to serve, please contact Becky Koch, Cindy Bierman or sign up at our new Connection Center on the west wall of the gathering area.

CONNECTION CENTER

As you may have noticed our new “Connection Center” is located in our Gathering area. It will be used to welcome visitors and members. It will also be used as a central place where congregants can find and collect information about various events, activities and sign ups.

FALL STEWARDSHIP FOCUS

As we prepare for 2023, our Fall Stewardship Focus will be on November 13 & 20. We will look at some Unexpected Heroes of the Bible and see how their giving and serving made a significant difference and touched the life of the church. November 20th will be our commitment Sunday. Each of us can be Unexpected Heroes in our community and in our church through our giving, our serving, our praying, our presence and our witness. Please be praying about how you will live out your faith through your commitment to our church in 2023.

Starting today, we will once again be passing the offering plates to receive the morning offering. We will also have the Noisy Buckets on the second Sunday of each month.

This month our church is in charge of providing buns for the Mitchell Food Pantry Thanksgiving meal. As our November “One Thing”, we will be collecting cash donations to purchase the buns. Please place your donations in the “One Thing” box located in the gathering area. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to give. 

“SHOEBOX CHRISTMAS”

Thank you to all that took a tag from our angel tree. We were able to pack over 50 shoeboxes for the Spirit Lake Ministry Center, for children in SD and ND.

Gina Reynen will take you through her faith journey on Sunday, November 13th at 2 PM at Downtown FUMC. Free Admission. A donation to the Food Pantry is welcome but not required. CONNECTION CENTER

As you may have noticed our new “Connection Center” is  located in our Gathering area. It will be used to welcome visitors and members. It will also be used as a central place where congregants can find and collect information about various events, activities and sign ups. If you feel this could be an opportunity for you to serve as a welcome leader, please see Becky, our Family Ministry Director.

Tonya Stahl- Our New Office Manager!

If you’ve called or stopped by the church office in the last two weeks, a new cheery person has greeted you. Tonya Stahl is our new front desk person and Office Manager. Tonya, Bret, and family have been a part of our church family for a number of years so she is very familiar with our church family. She is a great addition to our staff team and is ready to help our church and church family in any way that she can. If you have not done so, please take a moment to welcome Tonya.

October’s “One Thing” is Mac and Cheese boxes or single microwave cups for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Meal baskets.  The meals are distributed to people of need in our community. We have met our goal of  500 boxes.  Thank you for your generous giving.

Family Ministry Team will again be participating in the Spirit Lake Ministry’s Shoebox Christmas!  Last year, over 5,000 shoeboxes were received for children that might not otherwise get a Christmas gift.  This year, Downtown FUMC is filling boxes a little differently.  There will be an “Angel Tree” set up in the Gathering Area from Sun., Oct. 16-Sun., Nov. 6, where anyone may pick a tag from the tree and follow the instructions available by the tree.  Thank you for all you do to support this important ministry!  Questions? SILENT AUCTION DEADLINE & RECIPIENT OF FUNDS

Today, Sun., Oct. 30, will be the closing bid day for the display of items made by Mildred Merriman, a long-time Tuesday Quilter here at Downtown FUMC who passed away a few years ago.  The funds will go to Haiti Alive Ministry to help with the crisis in their nation.  Fuel and food costs have skyrocketed, adding great stress to their ministry.  We will also be accepting additional donations for Haiti Alive.  There is a basket on the table by the quilt items.  Thank you for your generous giving to such a needed cause

Sun., Oct. 30, will be the closing bid day for the display of items made by Mildred Merriman, a long-time Tuesday Quilter here at Downtown FUMC who passed away a few years ago. The funds will go to Haiti Alive Ministry to help with the crisis in their nation. Fuel and food costs have skyrocketed, adding great stress to their ministry. We will also be accepting additional donations for Haiti Alive. There is a basket on the table by the quilt items. Thank you for your generous giving to such a needed cause.

DAKYOUTH is an annual youth event for both middle school and high school youth in the Dakotas Conference.  This year, it is scheduled for November 11-13, in Aberdeen.  We would love to take a full bus there.  The cost is $75 per youth, plus the cost of meals for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  I am hoping to stay at a local church to keep costs down.  For more information, contact Cindy at 605-999-9680.

Halloween fun for Saturday, October 29.  There are two trick-or-treating events in town that afternoon.  The Middle Schoolers (6th-8th  graders) will be hosting the Trunk or Treat at the Middle School.  We will take the bus over at 3:30pm.  The event is from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  Please let me know if your youth is riding with me or meeting us there and what your pickup plans are.

The Senior High Youth will be hosting the Main Street Trick or Treat from 2 pm until 4 pm.  They will set up on Main Street across from the church.  Costumes are encouraged for both events, but please make sure they are appropriate for younger children to view.   If you have any questions, please contact Cindy at 605-999-9680.

Family Ministry Team will again be participating in the Spirit Lake Ministry’s Shoebox Christmas! Last year, over 5,000 shoeboxes were received for children that might not otherwise get a Christmas gift. This year, Downtown FUMC is filling boxes a little differently. There will be an “Angel Tree” set up in the Gathering Area from Sun., Oct. 16-Sun., Nov. 6, where anyone may pick a tag from the tree and follow the instructions available by the tree. Downtown FUMC Family Ministry invites ALL youth, parents, grandparents, and ANYONE who loves and cares for our youth community to join us for A Mother’s Story: Suicide Prevention. On Wed., Oct. 12, 7-8 PM, Alex’ mom, Stefanie (James) Kummer, will be sharing her son’s story of how he tragically died from suicide and her hope to bring awareness. Presentation is in the Worship Center/Sanctuary. The public is invited.

Downtown FUMC is searching for an Office Manager. This position will cover office duties, including weekly bulletin and scheduling. is “Our Home” in Parkston, Huron and the surrounding area. Our Home, Inc. programs offer a comprehensive continuum of residential treatment to youth with varying and unique needs. We are collecting coloring books, adult coloring books, sudoku books, cross words, word searches, etc. You may place the books on our “One Thing” shelf in the gathering area.

PARENTS: Sunday School and Youth Group are back! Youth Group will be every Wednesday, at 6 PM. The schedule will be Overflow worship at 6 PM, a meal for the Youth and volunteers at 6:30 PM, and end with small group at 7:00 PM. Sunday School is at 9 AM. We are asking that parents sign their children up for both Sunday School and Youth Group. ATTENTION YOUTH GROUP FAMILIES

Wed., Sept. 28, both Youth Groups will attend the movie, Play the Flute, at Mitchell Christian School. They will meet at 6 pm for supper at Downtown and then be transported to the Christian School by church bus. The movie begins at 7 pm, so plan for pick up at 9 pm. All Youth must be picked up and signed out with a Youth leader AT MITCHELL CHRISTIAN by 9 PM. If your Youth is driving themselves, a parent consent form is needed. Questions? AsONE MINISTRIES – IMMERSION TRIP DOCUMENTARY

Kristy Szabo and Jacki Miskimins are participating in an Immersion Trip yo Uganda this October with AsOne Ministries. AsOne, based out of Sioux Falls with roots in Mitchell, works to alleviate systemic poverty in Uganda through wholistic, community-based solutions including education, social enterprise, healthcare, and agriculture training. Logan Theatre will show a documentary on Thurs., Sept. 29, 7 pm. Free tickets are available at the church office. To learn more, you may talk with Kristy or Jacki.

FAMILY FUN EVENT . . .FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

“Carving Out Time for Jesus!” is scheduled for Wed., Oct. 5, from 5:30-6:30 pm. There will be pumpkin carving, painting, and decorating! Communion is this Sun., Sept. 11, at our Worship in the Park service.  If you won’t be joining us at Hitchcock Park but will be worshipping with us through one of our technology means, you may stop by the church to pick up the prepackaged communion elements.

will be “Our Home” in Parkston, Huron and the surrounding area. Our Home, Inc. programs offer a comprehensive continuum of residential treatment to youth with varying and unique needs. We are collecting coloring books, adult coloring books, sudoku books, cross words, word searches, etc. You may place the books on our “One Thing” shelf in the gathering area. Thank you!

COMMUNION

Communion is this Sun., Sept. 11, at our Worship in the Park service.  If you won’t be joining us at Hitchcock Park but will be worshipping with us through one of our technology means, you may stop by the church to pick up the prepackaged communion elements.

WORSHIP IN THE PARK

Worship in the Park is at Hitchcock Park this Sun., Sept. 11, at 10 am. There will be worship, food, and games for the whole family. We ask that you bring a side dish or a dessert to share as well as lawn chairs. We hope to see everyone there!

UNEXPECTED HEROES

Pastor Keith’s new sermon series, beginning this Sunday, is called Unexpected Heroes. The Bible is full of stories and examples of unexpected persons making all the difference in a story or situation. Who knows if you or I might be the unexpected hero in someone’s faith story. 

CLEAN COMEDY FOR A CAUSE

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sun., Sept. 11, 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. Their goal is to raise funds for their new Women’s Village (building homes for women and their children) and scholarship support for their school. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to lagonavealive.com/comedy.

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND YOUTH GROUP

PARENTS: Sunday School and Youth Group are back! Youth Group will begin Wed., Sept. 14, at 6pm. Sunday School will start Sun., Sept. 18, at 9am. Youth Group is going to be a little different this year, starting with Overflow worship at 6, a meal for the Youth and volunteers, and end with a small group. We are asking that parents sign their kids up for both Sunday School and Youth Group. The online registration form is on our Facebook and website, or there are paper copies in front of the Family Ministries office. We are so excited to kick off this school year!!

PRIME TIME ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

Prime-Time Adult Sunday School class will start meeting again on Sun., Sept. 18, at 9am (during the Sunday School hour). The first topic will be a journey through the book of Proverbs.

OFFICE MANAGER NEEDED

We are searching for an Office Manager for Downtown FUMC. This person will cover office duties, including weekly bulletin and scheduling. Organizational, computer skills, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Suite required. GRIEVING WITH GREAT HOPE

Any adults who are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one through death are invited to participate in this six-week session. AsONE MINISTRIES – IMMERSION TRIP & DOCUMENTARY

Kristy Szabo and Jacki Miskimins are participating in an Immersion Trip to Uganda this October with AsOne Ministries. AsOne, based out of Sioux Falls with roots in Mitchell, works to alleviate systemic poverty in Uganda through wholistic, community-based solutions including education, social enterprise, healthcare, and agriculture training. Logan Theatre will show a documentary on Thurs., Sept. 29, 7 pm. Free tickets are available at the church office. To learn more, you may talk with Kristy or Jacki.

AUGUST “ONE THING”

For our August "One Thing" we will be collecting cans of wet cat food for the Mitchell Animal Rescue. They are looking specifically for Fancy Feast kitten pate or Friskies adult pate, but any kind of wet cat food will work. The Mitchell Animal Rescue is a small group of people who are committed to helping rescue pets from the city pound as well as assisting other pets in need. You can place your donations on the "One Thing" shelf in the gathering area. Thank you!

TRANSFORMING LIVES: HOPE IN ACTION

Dr. Donald E. Messer, former president of Dakota Wesleyan University (1971-81) will provide an overview of the Center for Health and Hope, a non-profit faith-based 501c3 charity, after the service in the chapel. He will share how First United Methodist Church has provided resources over the years to combat poverty, stigma, and discrimination in Africa and Asia. For more information, check out www.centerforhealthandhope.org. We invite you to grab some refreshments in the gathering area after church and head on over to the chapel to listen to Don speak!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT HELP

AUGUST “ONE THING”

For our August "One Thing" we will be collecting cans of wet cat food for the Mitchell Animal Rescue. They are looking specifically for Fancy Feast kitten pate or Friskies adult pate, but any kind of wet cat food will work. The Mitchell Animal Rescue is a small group of people who are committed to helping rescue pets from the city pound as well as assisting other pets in need. You can place your donations on the "One Thing" shelf in the gathering area. Thank you!

OFFICE MANAGER NEEDED

Johanna has brought great gifts to our church office over the past year.  She has a new opportunity to grow and bring her skills to the Mitchell Chamber.  Because she is leaving, we are starting the search for her replacement. Seeking Office Manager for Downtown Mitchell First United Methodist Church.  Cover office duties, including weekly bulletin and scheduling. FALL SCHEDULE

It had been our plan for our church to return to two worship services in September, however, to do that we would need additional musicians and technical helpers for our livestream, radio, and sound needs. Unfortunately, the additional help has not materialized. At our July Church Council meeting it was decided to continue with one worship service in the fall. We are going to try a slight change in timing for our Sunday morning schedule. Sunday School will begin at 9:00 am and Worship will begin at 10:00 am. Even with the one service schedule we could still use more people to serve in music and technology on Sunday morning. We are excited for the new Sunday School year and fall worship season to begin. 

WORSHIP IN THE PARK

Mark your calendars! We are having our worship in the park at Hitchcock Park on Sunday, September 11th at 10am. We will have worship, food, and games for the whole family. We are asking that our church family bring a side dish or a dessert to share as well as lawn chairs. We hope to see everyone there!

CLEAN COMEDY FOR A CAUSE

Clean Comedy for a Cause, featuring comedian Tim Boyd, is a fundraiser event for LaGonave Alive on Sunday, Sept. 11, starting at 6:30pm, at the Central Church in Sioux Falls. Their goal is to raise funds for their new Women's Village (building homes for women and their children) and scholarship support for their school. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to lagonavealive.com/comedy.

Bev Rowley is having an open house for her 90th birthday on Saturday, August 27th from 1:30-3:30pm in the Wesley Acres dining room. Wesley Acres address is 1115 W Havens Ave. Anyone is welcome to attend but they are asking that no one bring gifts.

Pastor Keith is participating in the “Tour de Corn” bike event this year on August 20th! He will be completing the 62-mile ride to help our tuckpointing project that will be starting soon to improve the exterior of our church building. DAKOTAS CONFERENCE JOB OPENING

Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church is seeking a full time Assistant Conference Benefits officer to assist in the administration of the Dakotas Conference clergy and lay staff benefits program. You must have the ability to organize, problem solve, maintain records, and have oral and written communication skills. Knowledge in the use of data bases and computer skills is important. BILINGUAL SERVICE

Today, July 31st, the Hispanic Church has invited our congregation to worship with them at a bilingual service at 12pm in the chapel. They have also invited us for lunch at 2pm at Hitchcock Park.

Love Feast school supply distribution is Saturday, August 6. Help is needed at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 5 to assemble the kits & on Saturday, August 6 to help hand them out. Please see Carol Hasz in the lounge after the service or call her at 605-770-7991. Thank you.

TOUR DE CORN

Pastor Keith is participating in the “Tour de Corn” bike event this year on August 20th! He will be completing the 62-mile ride to help our tuckpointing project that will be starting soon to improve the exterior of our church building. You can donate to this project by pledging an amount per mile or you can just make one overall donation. You can place your donations in the offering, just make sure they are marked “Tour de Corn” or send/bring them into the church office. Thank you!

WE ARE HIRING!

Want to combine your knowledge of technology with your passion for service and get paid for it?  Downtown First United Methodist Church has an opportunity for you! In this part-time role, the Head Technology Personnel will oversee the technology for worship, presentations, livestream, and radio broadcasts. You must be available for Sunday morning services and other services as needed (funerals, weddings etc.). Salary will depend on your skills, but we are willing to train the right individual.
