VERSE FOR REFLECTION: Proverbs 15:31-33

The ear that listens to life-giving correction dwells among the wise. Those who refuse discipline despise themselves, but those who listen to correction gain understanding. The fear of the LORD is wise instruction, and humility comes before respect.

DWU BLUE & WHITE DAYS PARADE

If anyone is interested in putting a float together to represent First United Methodist Church for the DWU Blue & White Days Parade, please let Tonya know so she can get us signed up. The parade is on Saturday, October 12th, at 10am. This is a great way to show our support for DWU and our community by having a presence at this event.

HOSPITAL VISITATION

If you, or someone in your family is hospitalized, either in Mitchell or Sioux Falls, please call the church office and let Tonya know. That way Pastor Keith will know to stop by. Also, make sure your name is on the “Methodist” list when you check in. This is also true when someone is admitted to one of the care facilities in our community. Thank you for helping us care for our church family.

DO UNTO OTHERS

This past Sunday Pastor Keith began a new sermon series entitled “Do Unto Others.” This series and title come from Luke 6:31 where Jesus is teaching his followers about loving their enemies. In a world that seems to be quick to categorize people as friends or enemies, Jesus’ words are so very relevant for us yet today. In this series we’ll be focusing on five key components for loving our enemies, or how to treat one another in a very polarized world. The five components are Kindness, Respect, Love, Humility, and Compassion. As we come to a very divisive season in our nation, that of a nation election, may we focus on what Jesus has to say about how we should treat one another, even those we may disagree with. Our call is to …” Do Unto Others…”! Please join us this week as Pastor will be talking about Respect.

BACKPACK BLESSING

Today, we will have a special blessing of backpacks during worship. We invite all children, youth, teachers, and school administrators to bring your backpacks to worship. We will pray over them for the school year.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

The Immerse Bible Study will begin on Sunday, September 22nd and Wednesday, September 25th. We will be starting off with Prophets. We will meet on Sundays at 9am and Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Please let Natalie Piehl know if you have any questions. Books are available for purchase for $13/ea.

THE LORD’S PRAYER…X2

Why do we use two different versions of the Lord’s Prayer? One being the traditional version and one a more contemporary version. Great question. It goes back to two years ago when we did a sermon series focusing on the Lord’s Prayer. At the same time one of the Sunday School classes was learning about the Lord’s Prayer. The class was wondering what certain words meant, mainly because they are words that we don’t normally say. Then they asked if we could use a version with words more like what we use today. So, we found a version with more “contemporary” language.

Some people say that they prefer and still use the traditional version all the time, and that is OK. Some people have said that using the two versions makes them think more about what the words really mean and what they are praying for. Using the Lord’s Prayer isn’t just about reciting memorized words, it’s really about a format for prayer that is given to us to help connect with God more deeply.
